Common questions

Does Medicare pay for home health care?

Yes, if a doctor certifies you are homebound and need part-time skilled care (nursing or therapy). Medicare Part A or B then covers it at 100% with no copay for the home health services themselves.

Can I choose my home health agency?

Yes. Federal rules require hospitals to respect your choice of any Medicare-certified agency that serves your area. Tell the discharge planner which agency you want.

What does the star rating mean?

CMS's Quality of Patient Care star rating summarises how often an agency's patients improved and whether care started on time, compared with agencies nationwide. 3 stars is about average.

Is home health the same as home care?

No. Home health is medical care (nurses, therapists) ordered by a doctor and usually covered by Medicare. Home care (companions, help with daily tasks) is non-medical and usually private-pay.
